When all sorts of accusations, denials, revelations, disclosures, and leaks are swarming and spilling around the security agencies of the United Kingdom and the USA, it is worse when the Snowden effect erupts. A bruised and slightly disillusioned Commander Elaine Black, training officer and senior security advisor at GCHQ Bude Listening Facility, is plunged into a bewildering and dangerous battle to make sense of and counter a desperate threat to British Security. Headless bodies, fire bombings, threats of chemical warfare unloosed on a small West Country town, apparently straightforward murders and the killing of a policeman make Elaine Black thankful for the involvement of a pair of incorruptible and driven police detectives and the experience and expertise that they bring to the party. However, as the stakes get higher and higher, Elaine is further gratified to have two old fighting companions on side. The question is, can the team confound the multinational conspiracy that stretches to the highest echelons of British and American financial and political establishments?

Meet the Author:

I’m Andie J. Christopher and I write edgy, funny, sexy contemporary romance. I grew up in a family of voracious readers, and I picked up my first Harlequin Romance novel at age twelve when I’d finished reading everything else in my grandmother’s house. It was love at first read. It wasn’t too long before I started writing my own stories — my first heroine drank Campari and wore a lot of Esprit.

Although, I set aside writing fiction for a while, my love of reading romance novels stayed with me through college, law school, and multiple cross-country moves. During one long East Coast winter, I decided writing a book would be a good excuse to avoid braving the elements. It was love at first write. My heroes are dirty-talking alphas, and my heroines traded Esprit for Free People. (None of them would turn down a Campari, though.)

Guest post: "A Regular Day in My Writer's Life," by Children's Author Michelle Nott

A regular day in my writer's life starts with a breakfast smoothie and a bike ride or swim. To get going physically helps me get going mentally. I find that the hour I'm active outdoors helps stir my imagination, focus on the day ahead and plan out what needs to be done – Work on a new idea? Critiques? Revisions? Publicity?

Then I get to work. First, I do a quick check of my email to make sure there is nothing pressing. I answer any quick questions first and save longer, less dire responses for noon. Ideally, I like to do any creative work, whether on new material or revisions, as early in the day as possible. Around mid-day, I answer more emails, eat lunch, and either get back to writing or work on critiques or the more business side of publishing.

Once my children return from school, I leave my computer and give them my attention to listen to their day, have a snack, and help with homework if necessary. Once my daughters are on track with their assignments, I get back to work until dinner. I love to cook and find that during the time I am preparing meals my mind wanders and explores possibilities in my current work-in-progress. (It has happened that a pot boils over or dinner is late because I've had to stop to jot down “a great idea!”) I use evening hours to read in my genre or books on the craft of writing before going to bed.

But, to be honest, regular days don't always happen in a (my) writer's life! Inspiration hits when and where it will. I've written unexpected ideas on my grocery list in the produce aisle, recorded a scene on my iPhone in a parking lot and, some days, my creativity is on sleep-mode. When that happens, I catch up on critiques and business work. Or better, I change my environment. I get out,  go to a museum or simply going to the library or to a cafe to free write. Unexpected sounds, sights, smell, etc. can sometimes spark the best ideas.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

In 2004, Michelle moved to Belgium. When she noticed that her daughters' book collection included more French titles than English ones, she decided to put her creative writing degree to use. All travel beneath Floor 21 is forbidden, and nobody can ever recall seeing the ground floor. Beneath Floor 21, a sickness known as the Creep infests that halls of the Tower. A biological mass that grows stronger in reaction to people’s fear and anger, the Creep prey’s on people by causing them to hallucinate until they’re in a state of panicking, before finally growing strong enough to lash out and consume them. Book Excerpt

When you stop and think about it, I mean, our lives don’t make sense. We couldn’t have always lived up here, right? It gets me pretty antsy thinking about it because, I mean, this is a tower, so we had to have come up the stairs at some point. Didn’t we?
I don’t know, and thinking about it gets me frustrated. When I’m in this kind of mood, I go to the rooftop and look out. You can actually see other towers rising up in the distance. Some aren’t even that far from ours. I stare at them, and I’m just like . . . is anybody over there? Is anybody looking back at me? Does anybody know or remember we’re trapped in this place?
Or are we all that’s left?
After I’ve gotten myself sufficiently depressed, I’ll stare over the edge of the roof, trying to see how far below I can look. Thing is, it’s impossible to see much. This tower just vanishes into the Darkness. Nobody, and I mean nobody, even knows why. It’s just blackness down there.
Oh, about Floor 12. Yeah, that’s where the Creep really starts. The Creep? It’s this . . . gunk. Super-disgusting stuff that you shouldn’t touch because it makes you feel weird, and the lower down the Tower you go, the more you see it. It starts to cover the walls, and it’s kinda gross. It’s really slick, like saliva, and it looks all muscle-y. Almost alive. Good thing you don’t have to worry about it when you’re higher than Floor 11. Still, I wonder what it is. We all do. I know that when you touch it, you can start hallucinating. I did once. Well, okay, I’m lying. I’ve touched it a few times when I’ve been on the lower levels, which is why my parents made the rule that I couldn’t head down there in the first place. I mean, I don’t pay attention to them, but I get why they don’t want me going that far below into the Tower. The Creep makes you see . . . things. Shadowy things. Sometimes they’re right in front of you, but most of the time, they’re in the corner of your eye. They say that by Floor 21, you don’t even have to touch the Creep to hallucinate, which is a total trip. Must suck to live down there.

Guest post: "Because of Love," by Brian W. Matthews, author of 'The Conveyance'

I write about scary stuff. It’s what I do.
What I’ve never written about is the time I almost saw a ghost.
This ethereal manifestation happened in the basement of my parent’s home, where I was living with my middle brother. The basement was a surprisingly large space for a middle-class rambler with a detached garage. An orange metal, gas-fueled fireplace burned in one corner. A rather longish bar ran along the opposite wall. I don’t remember if my father made it or it came with the house. Didn’t matter. To teenagers nearing the legal drinking age, it was cool.
It was the late 70s, and our paternal grandfather (we called him Pipi) had passed away. His death hadn’t been entirely unexpected, but it still hurt. Illness is first a wound, and then a scab. You get accustomed to it. I think the word is habituated.
Eventually, though, death comes along like a bully and rips the scab off in great bloody hunks. The wound is once again exposed again, raw and throbbing. You wince. You cry. You shake your head in wonder. Then, gradually, you start to heal for good.
Time had passed since our grandfather’s passing. The hurt had faded. Instead of a sharp, agonizing pain, it had become a dull, warm ache. On the night of the sighting, my brother and I were in our beds. He slept across from the stairway that led to the upper level. I shared wall space with the fireplace. While I cannot remember exactly what time this happened, I believe it was still early in the night. Somewhere between eleven and midnight, perhaps? Pretty close to the witching hour, which kind of makes sense.
Sleep had yet to claim me when I heard my brother call my name.
I rolled over to face him. He appeared little more than a black lump in the dark. “What?”
“You’re not going to believe this.”
“Believe what?”
“It’s Pipi.”
I closed my eyes. Really, you want to talk about him now? “Can’t this wait until tomorrow? I’m tired.”
“No, I mean it’s him,” he whispered. “Here’s here, sitting on the stairs.”
My brother is pretty much fearless. Nothing frightens him. Today, he’s a thirty-year police veteran who has worked as an undercover narcotics officer, did stints with S.W.A.T., and completed the FBI’s National Academy Training Program. He’s as bad as a badass can get. He’s been that way since we were young.
So when I heard the unease in his voice, I knew he had seen something. My heart started to race.
“Not funny,” I told him. Not the best comeback, but it was all I had.
“Get over here. You gotta see this.”
Nope. Not a good idea. Wasn’t going to do it. I pulled the covers over my head.
“Did you hear me?” he asked.
“Go back to sleep. You’re seeing things.”
“He’s sitting on the stairs waving at me!”
Waving? That didn’t sound scary. I lowered the sheet and looked toward the dark stairwell. From the angle of my bed, I couldn’t see up the stairs. “You’re not messing with me, are you?”
“Hurry up!” he hissed. “I think he’s starting to fade.”
I hesitated. I had loved my Pipi. He’d been such a big part of my life that his passing had left me floundering. But as I said, time had passed. The healing had started. Did I want to rip open that wound again?
Could I be that brave?
My brother’s exasperation grew. “Dammit, Brian! What are you waiting for?”
I had missed my grandfather so much. Did I want to start missing him all over again?
That’s when I found out I could be brave.
I rolled over and faced the wall.
My brother didn’t say another word. Soon the ghost faded. That there was a ghost I’ve never doubted. And I don’t begrudge my brother for having his final goodbye to our grandfather.
It just wasn’t the right thing for me.
That was the time I almost saw a ghost.

And I didn’t, because of love.

Auston Habershaw is a science fiction and fantasy writer and author of The Saga of the Redeemed (part one to be released by Harper Voyager in February 2015). You can find links to his stuff through Amazon or Goodreads (see the links to your right!). He got second place in the Writers of the Future Contest in the first quarter of 2014 (Volume 31), so he presumably has some idea of what he’s doing (though not the *best* idea, obviously). He’s also an English professor, a pretty good storyteller, and a big time geek. This blog is for him to discuss and explore some of the crazy ideas that are usually kicking around in his head, throw out some of his homemade RPGs for people to use or see, advertise his budding writing career, and see just what this whole ‘blog’ thing is about. Enjoy!
