Can you tell us how you got started writing fiction?

I’ve always been a storyteller at heart, even before I knew what that meant. My journey into writing fiction began with my love for reading. Growing up, I was captivated by the way stories could transport me to different worlds and introduce me to complex characters. Eventually, the urge to create my own stories became irresistible. I started jotting down ideas, crafting short stories, and exploring the limitless possibilities of fiction. It was a natural progression from being an avid reader to becoming a writer, where I could share my own tales with the world.

How did you get the idea for your book, Is Truth Stranger Than Fiction? You Decide...?

The idea for this book came from a mix of personal experiences and the fascinating stories of people I’ve encountered over the years. I realized that truth often holds incredible, almost unbelievable elements. By blending real-life events with fictional twists, I wanted to create a unique challenge for readers—to discern what is real and what is invented. This concept added an interactive layer to the book, making it more engaging and thought-provoking.

Of all your characters, which one is your favorite? Why?

Tweeker, the protagonist from one of the stories in Is Truth Stranger Than Fiction? You Decide..., holds a special place in my heart. Despite her struggles with substance abuse and the heartbreaking loss of her child, Tweeker embodies resilience and the complexity of the human spirit. Her journey is raw and real, reflecting the profound challenges people face and their capacity for growth and redemption.

Turn to page 91. What's happening? Bill is rejected by his father again. Will he ever be accepted?

On page 91, Bill experiences another painful rejection from his father. This recurring theme highlights the deep-seated issues in their relationship. Bill’s struggle for acceptance is a poignant part of his story. Whether he will ever be accepted is a question that keeps readers invested in his journey, hoping for a resolution that brings him peace and understanding.

What was the most challenging aspect of writing your book?

Balancing truth with fiction was the most challenging aspect. I wanted to honor the real stories that inspired the book while adding fictional elements to create intrigue and keep readers guessing. Finding that delicate balance, where the truth is respected but also cleverly disguised, required careful thought and creativity.

When writing, what is your go-to snack?

My go-to snack while writing is a handful of almonds and dark chocolate. It’s a perfect combination of energy-boosting nutrients and a little bit of indulgence to keep me motivated and focused.

What is the first thing you remember writing?

The first thing I remember writing was a short story about a magical forest where an odd kid lived. He had tons of keys that hung off his hand painted high top sneakers. Each key led to a mysterious adventure in the forest. That early experience of creating my own world and characters sparked my passion for storytelling.

What projects are you currently working on now?

I’m currently finishing a trilogy (mystical realism genre), starting Volume 2 of ‘Is Truth Stranger Than Fiction,’ and finishing a video series designed to help parents raise successful, college-bound kids. I always work on more than one project, but one more than others during each day. The variety keeps my creativity constantly moving forward.

What advice would you offer to new or aspiring fiction authors?

My advice to new or aspiring fiction authors is to write fearlessly and stay true to your voice. Don’t be afraid to take risks and explore new ideas. Consistency is key—write regularly, even if it’s just a little each day. Seek feedback, but also trust your instincts.

Most importantly, enjoy the journey of creating and sharing your stories. Every writer’s path is unique, so embrace yours with passion and perseverance.

Final advice: sometimes you just have to go for it. Send your writing to agents, publishers or even your local library - even if it’s not yet perfect (because it never will be if you are a perfectionist like me). If you want to do a TED talk like I did, go for that too. You have to put yourself and your stories out there. Rejection is just one step closer to yes!

In Is Truth Stranger than Fiction . . . You Decide, J.B. Miller takes readers on a captivating journey through the world of storytelling. The three stories in volume one explore the fascinating intersection of fact and fiction.

With her trademark wit, Miller poses thought-provoking questions about the nature of reality, the power of imagination, and the enduring appeal of a well-told tale.

Each story is a mystery for the reader to decide. Is it truth or is it fiction?

Hint: There is truth in every story.

Challenge: If you can figure out how the stories connect you can be acknowledged in volume two for being spot on.

Email miller.jody@icloud.com to enter your answers and your name. By doing so, and if you are correct, you agree to have your name mentioned in volume 2.
